notes were written by his mother America as his grandmother Matilda Luttrell
Lance talked about the James Jasper Lance family many years ago. America was
a daughter-in-law of James Jasper Lance. These notes list the family of James
Jasper Lance of Warren County, TN.

p. 17. James Jasper Lance is identified as "J42", the son of J4-Henry Lentz/Lance
and grandson of J-John Lentz Sr. At this point John Paul Lentz and other researchers
have concluded that most evidence favors this ancestry for James Jasper Lance.

- Tombstone, Ivy Bluff Cemetery, Warren County, Tennessee (0.7
mile south of Highway 70S and 0.5 mile east of Warren/Cannon county line); tombstone
data transcribed by Donald (Don) Lynn Lance. James' tombstone reports his birthdate
as October 25, 1791. The tombstone that exists at this cemetery now for James
Jasper Lance and his two wives (Mary Prater and Peggy Youngblood) was erected
by Charles Martin Lance, Sr., a descendent. The old tombstone was removed.
The birth/death information on the original tombstone was transcribed to the
new tombstone. This actual birthdate for James Jasper Lance is the only known
birthdate for him.
- Lance, family notes of James Jasper Lance Sr. These notes
indicate James Jasper Lance was from North Carolina. (However, it may not mean
he was born there.).
- Population Schedule of the United States Census of 1850
(Seventh Census) for Warren County, Tennessee., Page 137, Household 1074.
The census lists James as age 59, putting his year of birth as circa 1791. His
birth location is shown as North Carolina. This should probably be interpreted
as "James was from North Carolina", not born there, as evidence seems to show.
- Hillis, 1870 Census, Warren County, Tennessee, Page
197, Household 58. James' age is listed as 78, giving a birth year of circa 1792.
Birthplace is listed as North Carolina.
- Robert A. C. Hillis Jr., compiler, 1880 Warren County
Tennessee Census (No place:no publisher, 1988). For the home of Joseph Lance
the census reports that his father (James Jasper Lance) was born in North Carolina.
His children Rachel Lance Youngblood, James Jasper Lance, Jr., Texana Lance,
Roxana Lance, Amanda Lance and Clayton Lance also report that their father James
was born in North Carolina.
- 1850 U.S. census, population schedule, Warren County, Tennessee.

The household of James Jasper Lance, Sr., shows his occupation as "Farmer".
- 1850 U.S. census, population schedule, Warren County, Tennessee.
Microfilm 898, Book 1, p. 81a (13th District, November 21, 1850). James' occupation
is "farmer.".

living in Warren County, Tennessee.
- Tombstone, Ivy Bluff Cemetery, Warren County, Tennessee.
James' death date on his tombstone is February 16, 1879.
- Lance, family notes of James Jasper Lance Sr. These notes
report the year of James Jasper's death as 1879.
- Letter, John Paul Lentz to Robert A. Lentz, March 20, 1989,
Page 94. This approximate marriage date comes from the birth date of their first
child. Since new couples didn't waste much time in those days, it is inferred
that the marriage took place within a year of the birth of the first child.
No marriage record has ever been found for James and Mary, it is not know for
sure exactly where they were married -- North Carolina, Tennessee, or somewhere
enroute.
- John W. Prather Jr., compiler, Prater, Prather, Prator,
Praytor in America, 1620-1800, Volume II (Hendersonville, North Carolina:
John W. Prather, Jr., 1994), pp. 145-147. Mary Prater is listed in the family
of Bazel Prather as "Mary Prather." In Bazel's first will dated December 11,
1829, he mentions a daughter named "Mary Lince". Later, in Bazel's second will
dated July 14, 1832, he again listed a daughter named "Mary Linch." Since we
know that James Jasper Lance, Sr. married a Mary Prater around 1810, this would
seem to lend support that this Mary is indeed the same one.
- Letter, John Paul Lentz to Robert A. Lentz, March 20, 1989,
Page 93. This refers to the wife of James Jasper Lance, Sr. as "Mary Prater."
This is one of many references to the wives of James Jasper Lance of Warren
County, Tennessee.
- Lentz, Lentz Heritage., Chapter VI, Page 39. The
birth date of Mary listed here is March 10, 1794. Other references, such as
through GENDEX on the Internet, list her birth year as one year later -- in 1795.
The source of the 1795 information appears to a book entitled "The Prater/Prather
Family of America" or something similar. It appears that this 1795 date is incorrect.
- Lance, family notes of James Jasper Lance Sr. These notes
give Mary's year of birth as 1795.
- Tombstone, Ivy Bluff Cemetery, Warren County, Tennessee.
Her date of birth on her tombstone is March 10, 1794.
- Hillis, 1880 Warren County Tennessee Census. Rachel
Lance Youngblood and Clayton Lance report in the census that their mother (Mary
Prater) was born in North Carolina.
- Tombstone, Ivy Bluff Cemetery, Warren County, Tennessee.
- Ibid., The date of death on Mary Prater's tombstone is March
19, 1831. However, her father's second will (Bazel Prather), dated July 14,
1832, lists a daughter named "Mary Linch" -- so Mary was apparently still living
at this time. It appears that the death date on the tombstone may be incorrect.
Or was Bazel aware that she was now dead? Or was Bazel's will written before
her death? Since James Jasper Lance and Peggy Youngblood had their first child
born in 1833 (Carolina), then Mary had apparently died by that time.
- Ibid., The marriage date of James Jasper Lance and Peggy
Youngblood can be inferred from two sources. First, the death of Mary Prater
is established to be in March of 1831 from her tombstone at Ivy Bluff. Second,
the 1850 Warren County Tennesse census indicates a child named Caroline who would
have been born circa 1834. This puts the marriage date between 1831 and 1834.
- Hillis, 1880 Warren County Tennessee Census, District
11, Household 294. Margaret appears as the head of the household. James died
before this date.
- Hillis, 1870 Census, Warren County, Tennessee, Page
197, Household 58. "Margaret," age 52, appears in the household of James Lance.
- Population Schedule of the United States Census of 1850
(Seventh Census) for Warren County, Tennessee., Page 137, Household 1074.
"Margaret," age 38, is listed in the household of James Lance.
- Lance, family notes of James Jasper Lance Sr. These notes
are one of many references giving the second wife of James Jasper Lance as Margaret
(Peggy) Youngblood.
- Bob Prater, various email correspondence from
(Tulsa, Oklahoma) to Donald (Don) Lynn Lance, 2001-2004. Bob and Don have collaborated
on much of their personal research into the early Lances, Praters and Youngbloods
of Warren County Tennessee. Bob reports that "Margaret Youngblood", wife of James
Jasper Lance, was the daughter of Jonathan and Nancy Youngblood.
- Janice Price, "Elizabeth Lance," e-mail message from
(Warren, Michigan) to Donald (Don) Lance Lance, March-April 1997. Janice and
Don exchanged information from personal family research. Janice cites the 1860
Warren County TN census, which listed Margaret as born in Tennessee and is 48
years old. This puts her year of birth as circa 1812.
- Lance, family notes of James Jasper Lance Sr. These notes
give a birth year as 1812 for Peggy Youngblood, and indicate she was born in
Tennessee.
- Population Schedule of the United States Census of 1850
(Seventh Census) for Warren County, Tennessee., Page 137, Household 1074.
The census lists Margaret's age as 38, which give an approximate year of birth
as 1812. Birthplace is listed as Tennessee.
- Tombstone, Ivy Bluff Cemetery, Warren County, Tennessee.
The date on her tombstone is March 20, 1812.
- Hillis, 1870 Census, Warren County, Tennessee, Page
197, Household 58. Margaret is listed as age 52, giving her a birth year of circa
1818. Birthplace is listed as Tennessee. Possibly a census or transcription
error in her age, since other sources indicate she should be 58 by this time.
All other sources indicate circa 1811-1812, so the "52" may actually be a "59"
in the census.
- Hillis, 1880 Warren County Tennessee Census. For
the home of Joseph Lance the census reports that his mother (Margaret Peggy Youngblood)
was born in Tennessee. James Jasper Lance, Jr., also reports his mother was
born in Tennessee.
- Ibid., District 11, Household 294. Margaret's age is 69,
giving a birth year of circa 1811. Her birthplace is Tennessee.

- Hillis, 1870 Census, Warren County, Tennessee, Page
197, Household 58. Margaret's occupation is "Keep House.".
- Lance, family notes of James Jasper Lance Sr. These notes
give the year of Peggy's death as 1900. The death location is inferred to be
Tennessee, since she is buried in Warren County, Tennessee.
- Tombstone, Ivy Bluff Cemetery, Warren County, Tennessee.
The date on her tombstone is January 18, 1888.

indicate that James Jasper Lance and Peggy Youngblood had a child named "Texanna"
who never married.
- 1850 U.S. census, population schedule, Warren County, Tennessee.

listed in the home of James and Margaret Lance.
- Lance, family notes of James Jasper Lance Sr. These notes
give a birth year of Texanna as 1849.
- Population Schedule of the United States Census of 1850
(Seventh Census) for Warren County, Tennessee., Page 137, Household 1074.
The census lists Texanna as "Elan T.", and gives her age as 2. This gives a
birth of birth as circa 1848. Her birthplace is listed as Tennessee.
- Hillis, 1870 Census, Warren County, Tennessee, Page
197, Household 58. The census lists "Elan T." as age 22, birthplace Tennessee.

This book reports an "Amanda Ward Lance" is buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Coffee
County, Tennessee. Not sure, but this may be the Amanda daughter of James Jasper
Lance. Observations: 1) Her birt
h date matches census estimates for James' daughter, and 2) she has the surname
of Lance and is buried alone (apparently never married). This indirect evidence
seems to support that this Amanda is Ja
mes Jasper's daughter.

from (unknown address) to Donald (Don) Lynn Lance,
August 2-3, 2001. Betty and Don exchanged personal research on the early Warren
County Tennessee Lances, Tolivers and Elams. Betty reports Hannah's birthdate
as February 15, 1816. It was taken from a tombstone for Hannah Toliver in the
Toliver Cemetery, near Mt. Vernon, Lawrence County, Missouri. It is assumed
she was born in Tennessee with the rest of her family.
- Mays, The Book of Lance.. Sherman reports Hannah's
birthdate as in December of 1816; the more recent date provided by family researchers
in Missouri is taken to be the correct date.
- Haley, "Hannah (Lance) Toliver b 1816," e-mail to Donald

- Haley, "Hannah (Lance) Toliver b 1816," e-mail to Donald
(Don) Lynn Lance, August 2-3, 2001. Since Betty's research has a child named

that year.
- Mays, The Book of Lance.. Sherman reports the husband
of Hannah Lance as "John W. Toliver". The middle initial of "H." is taken to
be correct as this is what appears on his tombstone. Sherman also lists a son
named "John Hen
ry Toliver, Jr.". This would seem to indicated that "Henry" is John's middle
name.

the census taker. Notice that his in this census is fairly different from what
was reported in other censuses as well.

- Population Schedule of the United States Census of 1850
(Seventh Census) for Warren County, Tennessee., Page 132, Household 1030.
Rachel's age in the census is 23, giving a birth year of circa 1827. This is
likely a mistake, because the 1870 census lists her age as 52 -- giving her age
in 1850 as 32. It appears the digits were accidentally transposed. It appears
likely her birth year is actually circa 1818. Both the 1850 and 1870 census listed
her birthplace as Tennessee.
- Hillis, 1870 Census, Warren County, Tennessee, Page
