Profile for caverdon

Welcome to Don's Page

I've designed a few pages to tell a little bit about myself, and provide information on several items that interest me. If you have any comments, feel free to email me at info@TheLances.org.

In a nutshell, here's a few quick paragraphs that describe who I am...

I was born here in Tennessee, and I have lived here all my life. I have no intention of moving anywhere else because I love this state and I want to remain close to my family. I have a wonderful wife named Sherry, a daughter named Hannah (9), and a son named Noah (6).  We are homeschooling our children; you can find some links for homeschool information on our main home page.

I currently work as a staff software engineer for Square D/PowerLogic, where I develop Win2K, WinXP and Win2003 software for the power monitoring & control systems market. (We make quality stuff too, I might add! Only the best for our customers! Check us out sometime.) Occasionally I also do some consulting work on the side as time permits.

I enjoy working with computers, mostly microcomputers running flavors of Windows. My favorite OS is WinXP. (Win2003 is still growing on me.) My development languages of choice are C++, Java and C#.

I enjoy just about all types of music; a notable exception is rap. In particular I like southern gospel, bluegrass, classical and neoclassical music.  Among my favorite movies are Raiders of the Lost Ark, Titanic, Big Jake, It's A Wonderful Life, The Sound of Music, The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, and The Ten Commandments.  I don't care for any current television shows... there is nothing of good quality out there that is entertaining, wholesome or thought-provoking.  Well, there's always the football season!  ;-)

I also like to read just about anything, although my taste is mainly for nonfiction and inspirational works. A sampling of some of my favorites from my personal library are: H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Carl Sagan's Cosmos, Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time, Phillip Johnson's Darwin on Trial, Rush Limbaugh's The Way Things Ought to Be, Hafner & Markoff's Cyperpunk, William Dunham's Journey Through Genius: The Great Theorems of Mathematics, Peter Jenkins' A Walk Across America, Arthur Conan Doyle's complete works of Sherlock Holmes, Bill Halliday's Depths of the Earth, Stewart & Knox's The Earthquake America Forgot, Josh McDowell's More Than A Carpenter and Love Is Always Right, Gary Chapman's The Five Love Languages, Max Lucado's In the Grip of Grace, Bill Hybel's Too Busy Not To Pray, Rick Warren's The Purpose-Driven Life, John Eldredge's Wild At Heart, and the Holy Bible.

As for beliefs, I'm a Christian and a PromiseKeeper, and I serve Christ with Southeast Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. (I'm probably one of the few in the computer field that refuses to believe in the wacky new-age ideas of discordianism, mysticism, and the church of the subgenius.)  Why am I a Christian?  Well, contrary to what some people might think, Christianity is an intelligent -- not a blind -- faith.   Never is a Christian called to commit intellectual suicide; rather, a Christian is called to question exactly what he/she really believes:

"Come now, let us reason together," says the Lord. (Isaiah 1:18)
"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have..."
(1 Peter 3:15)
"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart..." (Jeremiah 29:13)

And in the end, if you're really interested in truth and are open-minded to consider all the possibilities (not just the ones you prefer), I think you'll find that the Bible's claims are true.  I certainly did.  Some may raise objections to those claims, but absolutely no one can deny what I've personally experienced to be true.

Although I still consider myself a relative newcomer to the field, I enjoy researching my family's genealogy.   If you're related to the Warren County Tennessee Lance family, you might want to check out information I have posted here or at the official web site for Lance-Lantz-Lentz-Lence People, Inc.   I also enjoy the outdoors. I like to travel occasionally. I like to play handball and volleyball. When outdoors, I enjoy hiking and caving. Numero uno on my list of favorite outdoor things to do, however, is caving! I'll go caving anytime, anywhere if I am able.   Check out my caving activities page for more information.

Recently, I've developed an interest in geocaching with my children, and I go by the name "caverdon".  You can see my geocaching profile & latest stats at the top of this page.  If you love the outdoors and you are into "high tech", I bet you would like it too!
