Blood Mountain Covenant: A Son's Revenge
A New Lance Heritage Book By Charles Hill

From the inside leaf of the book's dust jacket: "If a tally were being kept between good and evil, if goodness is considered as light and evil as darkness, then the score would now be even. But in this instance evil is one up on goodness, for dad -- a good man -- lies dead. But I can promise you one thing... the tally will not remain as it is." Blood Mountain Covenant is an account of the heinous murder of a man who, because of his convictions, strove to make his part of the world a better place for his family. John Lance is a man of God, and much beloved by the friends and family in his small town. Trouble starts for him and his family when his son is viciously ambushed by a group of notorious and ill-liked outlaws, and escalates when he himself cries out against the lawlessness of their activities. At the heart of the tale is the struggle of one family to walk the path of honor and fend off the treachery in their midst. Charles Hill not only tells a gripping story about murder, but paints an incredibly detailed picture of the daily life of a small North Georgia town during the late nineteenth century. |
You May Have Heard The Legend, But...
Charles Hill, a Lance relative, has written this book about the infamous murder of the Reverend John Henry Lance. Many errors have been circulated over the years due to an inaccurate account written by Carl J. Wellborn called "A True Story Of The Georgia Mountains". (Originally printed in the Atlanta Constitution on November 22, 1925.)
Learn the facts in Charles' well-researched book in which he tells the true story through John's son James (Jim) Washington Lance. The hardcover book consists of 262 pages and includes a foreword written by Bert Lance, former Director of Office Management and Budget for President Jimmy Carter (1976). The Reverend John Henry Lance was Bert's great-grandfather.
Reviews of the Book
Charles Hill, himself a son of Appalachia, has written a gripping account
of the brutal murder of a beloved and respected mountain preacher whose loyal
son cannot let the cowardly deed go unanswered. Told in the beautiful
rhythms of the region, this true tale has the suspense of a novel combined with
the details of good history. I enjoyed it very much and you will, too.
-- Zell Miller, U.S. Senator
A gripping account of a murder in the North Georgia mountains, and its
aftermath that caused decades of turmoil, sadness, and revenge. A powerful
story that is well documented and well written. Author Charles Hill not
only gives accurate details of a heinous crime, he also presents a very vivid
description of the people and the territory of North Georgia during the late
nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
--Ed Jenkins, Former U.S. Representative
